WHEN Jay woke up, the memories of earlier came back to him slowly: Craig’s lips on his neck, working slowly downward until they were wrapped around Jay’s cock. Craig hadn’t blinked when Jay told him that he didn’t have condoms, and maybe it was better that way, rubbing against each other, like they had done as teenagers.

The last thing Jay remembered before drifting off to sleep was Craig kissing his shoulder.

He smiled to himself and checked the time—they’d only been asleep a couple of hours—before he turned to look at Craig, who was still fast asleep.

I could get used to this, Jay thought.

No one had ever been in this bed with him except for Bonnie. After five years of sleeping alone, he’d grown accustomed to it, but it left a hole. He’d felt like a stranger in his own bed. Craig had only been there a few hours, but the warmth of waking up next to someone, it felt good. Jay hadn’t realized how much he missed it.

It was almost like they were seventeen again, having a sleepover in the tree house. They’d spread out their sleeping bags on the floor and in the muggy summer nights, they would sleep on top of them. Even in the heat, they were all over each other. Teenage boys, not quite grown into their bodies, with arms and legs everywhere, tangled together in a sweaty mess.

That was what Jay remembered about summers growing up. Playing ball all day, or sometimes, when the afternoons got too hot, swimming in the creek, and then sleeping in that tree house.

He brushed the curls away from Craig’s forehead, and after a moment, Craig stirred, opening his eyes.

“You look really serious for a guy who just got laid,” Craig said, before stretching his arms over his head and yawning.

Jay chuckled and shook his head. “I was just thinking that you’re the first person to sleep in this bed with me who is not my wife.”

Craig flopped his arms back down on the comforter, his eyes wide. “Really? There hasn’t been anyone?”

“I was raising my kids,” Jay said with a one-shoulder shrug. He rolled on his back, and Craig immediately curled to his side, resting his head on Jay’s shoulder.

“Single parents date. They get re-married,” Craig said. “It happens, I know it does.”

Jay smiled ruefully and shook his head. “It wasn’t just that. I had to take a lot of time after Bonnie died. I had to be there for Amanda and Mitchell. It took me about three months before it really sunk in that she was gone.”

“I’m so sorry,” Craig murmured, rubbing his hand against Jay’s chest.

“You know how it is,” Jay said. “You’ve been there.”

Craig shrugged. “Maybe. It was different with Bob. The cancer kept coming back. Every time he went into remission, it was like we were waiting for the other shoe to drop. There were about ten weeks in between the time we stopped treatment and when he passed, and in that time, we were able to talk about it.
